4. Write about something in the book that surprised you or that you found interesting.

I started a new book, called Divergent by Veronica Roth. I was surprised when Tris (Beatrice) found out she didn’t have a true faction that was meant for her. She found this out by taking a test that every 16-year-old takes to see if they should switch factions or stay in the one they were born in. Usually the test tells you what faction you are right away, however Tris got “Divergent” which means she has no clear faction. Tris was not allowed to tell anyone what her results were, because being Divergent can be dangerous.

3. Tell what you noticed about the characters, such as what made them act as they did or how they changed.

The main character, Tris changed her personality and look when she moved into the Dauntless (fearless) faction. First, she changed her name to Tris, originally Beatrice, because she thought it sounded braver. Also her new friend Christina gave her a make over so she would fit in to Dauntless. And recently, she got a tattoo of three birds, each one representing a member of her family that she left behind. A lot of Dauntless members have tattoos so she got one that had a message about moving on.

5. Write your predictions and about whether your predictions were right.

So far, I have made a few predictions and inferences. For example, when Tris and her brother Caleb had to get a test done to see which faction they’re meant to be in, I expected Caleb to stay in Abnegation, which is selfless, because he seemed very nice and caring. I thought Tris would end up changing her faction, which was correct, but Caleb ended up choosing Erudite, which means brainy and smart. Another prediction I made was, when Tris went to the choosing ceremony to choose her faction, I predicted she would choose Dauntless, which means fearless rather than her old faction, Abnegation which means selfless. My prediction turned out to be correct because she chose the faction I thought she would.

7. Tell about the connections that you made while reading the book. Tell how it reminds you of yourself, of people you know, or of something that happened in your life. It might remind you of other books, especially the characters, the events, or the setting.

I made a text-to-text connection to the factions in my book. The factions that the people are split up in reminded me of  the Districts in The Hunger Games trilogy. Except, factions represent your personality, and districts are randomly split up, your district is where you’re born. I also made a text-to-world connection. Tris walked by an old area where the factionless live, this reminded me of a downtown area where homeless people live. It makes me feel really bad when I see those types of people.

Thanks, factions are groups that people are split up in to, there is selfless, brave, smart, honest, and one more that i don’t remember 🙂
