Hunger- A Gone Novel

I finished Blood Red Road, and another book called Gone. I am reading Hunger, the sequel of Gone. In Gone, all the people over the age of 14 are Gone. All that is left are 14 year olds and younger kids. Sam, the main character, tried to take charge of the situation, when a few people from Coates Academy, Caine, Drake and Diana try to take over. They tell all the kids that they will help them more than Sam can, so they decide to follow Caine and his crew. Above all, children are mutating, as well as animals. Sam adapted the power to shoot fire from his hands. Caine can move objects telepathically. Others are finding the same thing is happening to them. But once the children turn 15, they ‘poof’ or disappear just like the others. Sam and Caine end up avoiding the ‘poof’ and Caine was banished from trying to kill Sam, his friend Astrid and all his friends (Edilio, Quinn, Lana etc.).  Even more weird, there is a giant barrier stopping the kids from going out of the zone they are in (Perdido Beach). In Hunger, Sam is trying to figure out why he didn’t disappear just like everyone else.

Question 2:

I was puzzled when the animals started mutating. Coyotes started talking. Worms started growing teeth and eating people. Seagulls grew talons! I was unsure why all this stuff was happening. I guess it was because of the FAYZ. The FAYZ is what the kids call the area surrounded by the barrier. FAYZ stands for Fallout Alley Youth Zone. I also never understood why they called it that…

Question 8:

The author’s style is very formal. It is written by a narrator and not in one person’s perspective, but it does follow specific people. It follows the main characters Sam, Astrid, Caine, Diana, Drake and even Quinn. The only thing that bothers me is that there are SO many characters!!! Here, let me go down the list; Sam, Quinn, Caine, Drake, Albert, Diana, Pete, Astrid, Howard, Lana, Pack Leader (the pack leader of the coyotes), Orc, Mary, Dekka, Briana, Taylor, E.Z, Elwood, Dahra and so many others.

Question 4:

It surprised me when Sam and Caine turned out to be twins! I thought this was surprising because Sam hates Caine, and Sam’s mother never told him he had a twin. I was also thinking, why she would keep that from Sam. Also, why did she get rid of Caine, and put him up for adoption but not Caine? I was really surprised when this happened, but even more surprised when Sam burnt off Drake’s arm. I was surprised when he got it back too. It turns out, he got his arm back, but there is a red whip now attached to him arm. That’s disgusting.
