Mocking Jay

3. Tell what you noticed about the characters, such as what made them act as they did or how they changed.

Recently, Gale was captured by the Peacekeepers. He wanted Katniss to shoot him so he wouldn’t have to deal with being held hostage. Katniss didn’t shoot him because she didn’t know what he was saying. I couldn’t imagine how Katniss could shoot her own best friend that she’s known for years back in District 12. I wonder if she actually would shoot him, to help him out so he wouldn’t suffer. I know that would be really hard to do to her best friend.

7.Tell about the connections that you made while reading the book. Tell how it reminds you of yourself, of people you know, or of something that happened in your life. It might remind you of other books, especially the characters, the events, or the setting.

In the story, Katniss got to eat a big meal with potatoes and ham that Tigris made for them to have. Katniss said that she was practically drooling because she hadn’t eaten much in awhile. I made a Text-to-Text connection at this part, in the first book, “The Hunger Games” Katniss was not used to eating a lot of food in District 12 and on the train that takes her to the Capitol, it was a luxury to have so much selection of food. This reminded me of when she was so thrilled to eat in “Mocking Jay.” It must be very strange to go from having next to nothing for food and then have a huge choice and selection.

14. Name 3 examples of signals that went off in your head while you were reading and explain them.

While reading, some signals went off in my head, for example if something shocked me, or made me think a lot about it. One signal was when Katniss noticed a little girl in a yellow rain coat watching her, and didn’t know who she was. Then later, Katniss saw her die when the Capitol was attacking from the roof, a bullet hit her in the chest. Even though Katniss didn’t know her, she couldn’t stop staring at the yellow coat. I’m guessing Katniss felt some kind of connection to her, maybe the little girl reminded her of Katniss’ sister Prim. Another signal was when Gale gets captured by the Peacekeepers, he told Katniss to go and leave him behind. Gale also mouthed something to her that she did not understand until later on, he mouthed ‘Shoot me’. I figured that Gale would rather be dead than be held hostage. However Katniss didn’t kill him because she couldn’t understand him. I wonder if Katniss will ever see Gale again, or if he will be captured like Peeta was temporarily. My third signal was, I think that Peeta is improving and slowly becoming his normal self again because when he talks to Katniss, he doesn’t seem so confused.

16. Tell what you think could be changed in the book to make it better for readers.

“Mocking Jay” has improved now that I’m at the climax rather than at the beginning, when it was kind of boring. Although I still prefer “Catching Fire” and “The Hunger Games.” I like the first two books better because they’re more thrilling and suspenseful. I think the third book might be better if there were the Hunger Games in it. However, it is the concluding book so it might be hard to include the games as well as the fight against the Capitol. The climax is getting more exciting so I look forward to how the series ends.
