Silent to the Bone

1. Tell what like or dislike about the book and why.

My new literature circles book is called “Silent to the Bone”. So far I dislike in the book how it’s not very exciting. I like when it’s hard to put a book down when you’re reading it, but this book doesn’t have that effect right now in the story. Maybe it will get more thrilling when I get closer the climax near the end. One thing I like about the book, is the detail the author uses most of the time. They explain certain things or places in the book well. if I had to choose something else that i liked it would be how the book started with the 9-11 call that Branwell had made. I think that was a good way to start because it gets the reader’s attention.

3. Tell what you noticed about the characters, such as what made them act as they did or how they changed.

I noticed that Connor, the main character, who is in first person narrative has changed a bit throughout the part that I’m reading currently. Near the beginning, before Branwell stopped talking, he liked Vivian who was a girl in her twenties baby-sitting Nikki, Branwell’s half-sister. Recently in the story, Connor stayed for dinner at Margaret’s with Vivian also. He started to like Vivian after talking to her for a while. I don’t think Branwell has the same feelings for Vivian now that he’s stopped talking.

7. Tell about the connections that you made while reading the book. Tell how it reminds you of yourself, of people you know, or of something that happened in your life. It might remind you of other books, especially the characters, the events, or the setting.

Connor spoke about a really huge ditch near Margaret’s house, it was like a big bowl in the ground with a waterfall running through it. This reminded me of ‘The Devil’s Punch Bowl’ which is also a big bowl in the ground about 15 minutes away from my house. It has water going through as well. Another connection I made was when Vivian was telling the story about Branwell dropping/shaking the baby, Nikki. I thought of when I took a baby-sitting course because the instructor told us NEVER to shake or drop a baby. She was very serious about this issue because it can do severe damage, or can be fatal.
